Spring 2026 Sports Update

This year, the Berkeley Athletic Fund awarded its first-ever Senior Scholarships to 12 outstanding student-athletes. Four of those scholarships were made possible through memorial gifts honoring two remarkable Berkeley High student-athlete alumni - Anthony B. Franklin and Cebron "Chief" Russ - with two scholarships awarded in each of their names. The remaining eight scholarships were funded by the Berkeley Athletic Fund through the generosity of our community.

Now onto the spring sports update.

BASEBALL

Coaches: Head Coach Matt Cord; Assistant Coaches: DeVallon Harper, Danny Duncan, Kevin Jordan, and Harry Torres

Team News: Berkeley High Baseball ended an impressive season with a 21-5-1 record. They finished 1st in their league and were WACC league champions. Akanni Owodunni was named all-league player of the year and Sedrick Henderson, Miles Mino, and Quinton Hill followed with all league 1st team. Enrique Sotelo and Isaiah Mays were selected for all league 2nd team, and the honorable mentions went to Julian Adorador and Ezra Brilliant.

BADMINTON

Coaches: Head Coach: Kyle Hayden

Team News:  The Berkeley High Badminton team solidified their spot as WACC Shoreline champions for the second year in a row. They worked hard and practiced every day, showing up ready to play. 

CREW

Coaches: Men's Crew: Varsity Head Coach Leon Maurer Assistants: Brad Stimpson, Robert West Boys Novice/Freshman Head Coaches: Chris Hoeper-Tomich Women's Crew: Head/Varsity Coaches Alexis Aiello Assistants: Natalia Miano, Mikaela Holland Girls Novice/Freshman Head Coach Reilly Metzger

Team News: After working hard all year-round Crew started their spring season ready to compete. They performed well at many regattas and are ready for the year to come!

SOFTBALL

Coaches: Varsity Head Coach Jason Kaneko

Team News: The Berkeley High Softball team ended as the 2026 WACC League champions. They had an impressive season with a record of 16-7.  With a total of 200 runs in the season they showed talent throughout the whole season. 1st team WACC all league honor went to Olive Lightfoot, Arielle Henriquez, Riley Pritchard and Camila Babij Ross with Ayshia Ball-Vorkeoper, June Shaller, Dags Sell following with a 2nd league WACC all league honor. 

BOYS LACROSSE

Coaches: Head Coach Jerem Stothers

Team News: The boys lacrosse team saw a year of growth and dedication. The team ended with a record of 17-5 and ended as 1st in their league. They had a successful season including wins against O’Dowd and San Marin. Kenzo Egawa was awarded WACC all league MVP! Satchel Wells Max Zoidis, Becker Hockenbrock, Ty Manning, Sam Larner, and Ivan Watson were selected for 1st team WACC all league. 

GIRLS LACROSSE

Team News: Girl's lacrosse ended with a record of 7-14 and showed lots of resilience. They worked hard all season and ended up winning the WACC championship! Congrats to Whitney Borovicka for being selected for WACC all league player of the year. Nava Boyarin, Tasya Xiao, Idra Elliot, Soraya June-Berent and Mire Vu-Beavers followed making WACC all league 1st team. Go Jackets!

BOYS GOLF

Coaches: Head Coach Ahmad Dilliehunt

Team News: The boys golf team worked hard this season and are ready for what next year brings!

BOYS TENNIS

Coaches: Head Coach Jeff Jue

Team News: The Berkeley High School boy's tennis team showed great team spirit competing and sharing time together afterwards getting boba drinks and food. The team reached the quarterfinals of the NCS Division 2 Championship led by two freshmen at the top of the ladder. It was a memorable season with good effort by all.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Coaches: Diving Head Coach Derek Douglas Simming Coaches Michael Wilson, Susan Helmrich, Garrett Pickford, Brianna Smyth

Team News: The Diving team's hard work paid off this year. It started with the Hawks Invitational at Las Positas Community College at the very beginning of the season. We took four varsity girls, two JV girls, and one varsity boy. Scarlett Nykamp took first place at the competition. Our year ended on a high note as well. At our league championship, we took first place in both boys’ and girls’ varsity. We also had four girls, and one boy qualify for the North Coast Sectionals. Scarlett Nykamp and Ulysses Kelly-Fay both qualified last year as well, but three of our varsity girls, Ma’ayan Praiss, Eva Doucette, and Sophia Nachman, qualified for the first time. At the end of the day, Scarlett took third place, and Ulysses took seventh. Scarlett’s place qualified her for the California State Championships in Clovis, California, for the second year in a row. But the highlight of the year was that at the WACC championship meet, Scarlett’s score of 492.45 broke the school record that had stood since 1992.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Coaches: Head Coach Azariah Hill

Team News: The boys volleyball team ended with an impressive record of 24-5 and finished in 1st place with an undefeated league record of 10-0. They are also 2026 WACC champions. Satchel Room was selected for player of the year and 1st team all-league alongside Oscar Hernandez and Axel Hawkins. 

TRACK AND FIELD

Coaches: Head Coach Danielle Perez

Team News: The BHS Track and Field team embodies excellence through community, teamwork, and belonging. As the largest team on campus, we provide a sports home for over 200 athletes per season, across 17 different events for both male- and female-identifying students. Our athletes have excelled from the beginning through the end of the season, with top finishers and new personal bests in each meet between February and May. In the post-season, our athletes notched 29 separate podium finishes at the WACC League Championship Meet. Our team then qualified 10 athletes to the prestigious North Coast Section Meet of Champions, with three athletes reaching the finals round in their events. And this coming weekend, Senior Carina Nottingham will represent BHS at the ultra-competitive CIF State Meet. Through it all, our Track and Field athletes have been tireless supporters and cheerleaders for each other. Our program nurtures individual effort and achievement with a strong grounding in community care and celebrating collective success. Way to go on an amazing 2026 season, Jackets!
