General Information

Berkeley Athletic Fund provides the nonprofit charitable status for Berkeley High Athletic teams to raise charitable donations and sponsorships. Each team has a designated fund with Berkeley Athletic Fund.  BAF provide the software, expense reimbursement, donation tracking, accounting, tax reporting, and general back-office bookkeeping to enable coaches & parent volunteers work their magic with the teams!

BAF supports the teams that are governed by the BHS Athletic Department; they are listed on this page and club teams.

How does BAF work with Club teams?

BAF welcomes officially recognized BHS club sports that meet all school requirements for club status. Under BHS policy, all student clubs – athletic or otherwise – must operate within an approved school structure, including maintaining a club charter, having a designated faculty advisor, and meeting Student Activities requirements for managing their funds. Typically, clubs maintain their funds through ASB, which retains 10% to provide the associated financial and administrative infrastructure. Athletic club teams may choose to manage their fundraising through BAF instead of ASB.

Because club sports operate outside the BHS Athletic Department and don't receive the same underlying District-funded resources as CIF-sanctioned teams, BAF uses a different contribution model for this category. Club sports participating through BAF retain 90% of the funds they raise, while 10% goes to BAF's central fund (compared with the 80%/20% model for CIF teams).

Like all BAF participation, this is a collective model, not simply a banking or administrative service. The central fund supports the infrastructure required to manage team funds efficiently and responsibly, while also pooling resources to strengthen Berkeley High athletics as a whole through team grants, shared resources and programming, Senior Awards scholarships, and other investments in the student-athlete experience. Individual teams and clubs won't necessarily receive back exactly what they contribute in any given year – the purpose of the model is to combine our resources for the benefit of the broader BHS athletic community. This policy applies consistently to all officially recognized BHS club sports, rather than being based on an individual club's fundraising level, use of particular resources, or perceived benefit from BAF.

How does my team participate in BAF?

Each team club or school supported must identify a Team BAF Rep.  This person, usually a parent, is the liaison between the team and the BAF and must regularly attend BAF monthly meetings - representing the perspective of their team and also carrying back important information to their team. The Team BAF Rep should have an understanding of how our organization works and be the dedicated person on the team who ensures the appropriate guidelines are followed when you deposit money into your team account and when you spend money from your team account.
